Art, craft and design education allows us to engage our senses, consider our perspectives and perceive the world in new ways. It fosters imagination, creativity, understanding and appreciation of aesthetics. Moreoever, it is essential for our personal and social development and sense of self.

The art, craft and design curriculum at Shuttleworth College aims to engage, inspire and challenge.  It is our vision to equip our students with the confidence, knowledge and skills to experiment, analyse, communicate, design and create works of art with increasing pride, resilience, independence and confidence.

Students are taught to use a range of techniques to record observations in a sketchbooks and other formats as a basis for exploring ideas. They experiment with a wide range of two and three dimensional media and processes, including printmaking, textiles and ceramics. Through analysis and evaluation of their own work, and that of others, students refine application techniques and visual impact of their creative outcomes. Across both key stages students conduct research and gain knowledge and inspiration from a range of art, craft and design genres and the world around them.

FAQs

How will my child be ‘set’ in this subject?

During Key Stage 3 pupils study art, craft and design in high performing groups of mixed ability. Throughout Key Stage 4, students are set according to their chosen GCSE options.

 

How many periods a week will children spend learning this subject?

  • Years 7 and 8 – 3 x 1 hour lessons per fortnight
  • Year 9 – 2 x 1.5 hour lessons per fortnight
  • Year 10 – 5 hours per fortnight
  • Year 11 – 6 hours per fortnight

 

What are the career opportunities of this subject?

Careers in the creative industries now represent over 20% of jobs in the UK today. Due to this, fashion/textiles, photography, television and film, advertising, theatre, illustration, interior/commercial design, and architecture are all excellent career paths. Qualifications in this area are also useful in all careers where imagination and presentation skills are required.

 

What ‘out-of-classroom’ or extra-curricular learning experiences will my child get?

Students at both key stages have the opportunity to access the art department during lunchtimes and after school as part of the ‘Create Club’ programme. We were delighted to welcome artist Ian Murphy to Shuttleworth in the previous academic year to deliver a workshop to all GCSE Art & Design students and also visited Yorkshire Sculpture Park with our Three- Dimensional Design students. We look forward to providing many more activities across all year groups in 2022-2023.
