Personal Development

‘Everyone has a fair turn to be as great as he pleases’. – Jeremy Collier

Introduction

“Hi, my name is Lewis and I am a student ambassador in Year 10. I enjoy the Personal Life Skills course because it expands my knowledge and it will give me a head-start in later life.” – Lewis Hayman Y10

KS4 OCR Personal Life Skills – Level 1

What will I study?

Learners follow the OCR Personal Life Skills qualification which provides them with the chance to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to manage life and future opportunities. This qualification encourages learners to look at ways to maintain good physical, mental and emotional health and well-being and identify potential risks. There is also the opportunity to gain the necessary skills to plan personal budgets and understand financial documents and transactions. Learners will consider the importance of relationships whilst looking at diversity, discrimination and prejudice within society. This programme also helps learners to identify skills and personal attributes needed for the workplace and any further training and development they themselves may need to succeed in their chosen areas of employment.

In addition to classroom sessions, learners are also given the opportunity to participate in a farm-based learning programme. Learners are able to spend time at a working farm in East Lancashire and cover topics such as wildlife and conservation, green wood-working, farm and small animal care, hedgerow management and dry-stone walling.

How will I be assessed?

All units within this programme of study are assessed via the completion of evidence booklets.

KS4 OCR Life and Living Skills – Entry Level 3

What will I study?

Learners follow the Life and Living Skills suite of qualifications which offers ‘bite-sized’ Entry Level units over a wide range of skill areas.  A range of these units is combined to build a Life and Living Skills qualification that reflects the learner’s individual interests and skills. Current units include: Communicating Information Using ICT, Effective Communication for Work, Completing a Job Application Form, Preparation for Work and Health and Safety Procedures at Work.

How will I be assessed?

There are no formal examinations within this programme of study. Evidence is normally generated as part of an activity that the learner has to carry out in the context of their main programme/curriculum activity. Examples of the types of assessment used include: direct observation of the learner, questioning of the learner or discussion examining the product or the learner’s work.

How can I stretch my learning?

If you want to improve your skills in this area, make yourself aware of appropriate legislation such as that relating to Health and Safety at Work. It would also be beneficial to practice your ICT and communication skills.
